Bio

Rick Sams is a Kansas City portrait photographer who works primarily with the male form. Born and raised in the Caribbean, Rick’s background as a third culture kid provides a unique objectivity to his work at Ikonoklast Foto. By looking past Western norms that often fetishize or shame the male body, he focuses on vulnerability and an inherent dignity, granting the male nude an artistic respect that has historically been withheld. He seeks out the most fleeting, ephemeral moments of connection during a session, believing that the true value of a portrait is found in freezing light and time to explore the question of what it means to be masculine.

A classically trained vocalist who sings with KC's Heartland Men's Chorus, Rick is also a serious science fiction devotee and a foodie who makes a mean cheesecake and a formidable Pad Thai. He believes that hope is a subversive force and the most powerful way to respond to darkness. He is at his happiest when exploring life’s big, hairy questions over a cup of coffee with a friend, new or old.
